20 Sexy Singles: Jim Karlovec

Jim Karlovec, 47

The perfect date: Going out to dinner at a nice restaurant with a lively environment but quiet enough that we can talk. For an athletic date, taking a bicycle ride through Chagrin Falls, then stopping at Starbucks or for lunch by the falls.

Something most people don't know about me: I was really fat in my 20s. I cycled cross-country twice when I was college, then I let myself go. I was not on a good path.

My passion: I'm a flat-out passionate person, and it manifests itself in different ways at different times. Obviously I'm passionate right now about cycling, design and architecture and walkable neighborhoods.

My favorite ... sports team: I'm more of a participant than anything. I would rather do the sport myself. ... musician/band: Classic rock. Definitely the British invasion bands, but I'm into all kinds of music. ... TV show: I went for years without owning a TV, but got one four or five years ago. I enjoy CNN and Meet the Press. ... place in Cleveland: Ohio City. That neighborhood is so Cleveland. ...book: The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. I was once riding my bike around Hawaii with only a bathing suit, toothbrush, a change of clothes and that book. ... vacation destination: I'm more into travel than vacation. It's about going to new and interesting places to do cycling, backpacking, skiing and checking out cool architecture. If I had to choose, it would be Durango, Colo. ... way to exercise: Cycling. There's a great community of cyclists in the Heights, so I can always find someone to ride with. ... month: September, as long as I can block out the season that comes next. ... website: The New York Times. ... drink: I always have a water in my hand, but I like beer and French red wine.

My usual hangout: The Colony or Pacific East, which has the best sushi in town. I go by myself with my iPad, and eat sushi and read The New York Times.

In high school ... I so didn't have my act together.

And now I ... feel like I'm making up for lost time. Life is so short, and I have so many passions I enjoy doing.

My No. 1 dating rule: Don't play games.

My deal-breaker: Smoking.

On a first date I never ... overcommit.

Biggest turn-on: An athletic woman with a big brain.

Biggest turnoff: Game-playing, smoking and excessive tardiness.

My hidden talent: It's not really hidden, but it's a talent I came to late in life — interior design. What really drives me in my business is the design components, bringing all these different skill sets together.

I own too many: Backpacking tents. I have six or eight.

My best feature: I'm good in a crisis.

My bad habit: Procrastination that stems from perfectionism.

My first kiss: Was long, long ago. I was in seventh or eight grade, an awkward boy-girl thing.

My guilty pleasure: Sushi. I'm definitely an environmentalist. I think what we are doing to the oceans is bad and the commercial fishing industry is part of it. The spread of sushi consumption has exacerbated that problem.

How my ex would describe me: A driven guy who has a hard time saying no. I'm can-do and I tend to take on too much at once.

How my best friend would describe me: Rough on the outside but soft on the inside. Those who know me, know I'm kind-hearted.

Going out or staying in: I love going out to restaurants, but I enjoy dinner and drinks and great conversation at home.

Early, late or right on time: Chronically on time.

Morning person or night owl: Naturally a night owl, but I feel best when I get up and work out before work.

Dogs or cats: I grew up a dog person, but now I have a cat, Morris, a big fat 17-pound cat who just moved in with me one day.

iPhone or Android: iPhone.

Dancing ... yes or no: I can't dance.

Twitter ... yes or no: Yes, but I only tweet when I'm on a big bike race.

My longest relationship: A little over a decade.

My biggest goal right now: Getting my company to the next level. As good as we are, we are on the verge of being much better, and I want to get to that next place.

Celebrity crush: Meg Ryan, Norah Jones or Lindsey Vonn. She pretty much rocks.

Most unusual place I've met someone: While doing a TV interview in Charlottesville, Va., I was leading a group of college students on a cross-country bike trip. She was a TV news reporter. It was one of life's missed opportunities.

My take on Cleveland's single scene: We have one of those? I may be single, but I don't consider myself part of the single scene.

What do you find sexy about yourself? I've been told I have great legs.

Why do you think you are single? Life ebbs and flows. Right now I'm focused on growing my business.
