Can you hear me now? Cell service can be spotty at best surrounded by downtown Cleveland’s steel skyscrapers. Major providers such as T-Mobile and Sprint are all beefing up their networks. AT&T is following suit with between 50,000 and 75,000 feet of permanent fiber cable. Our Twitter timeline just breathed a sigh of relief.
Light it up. GE Lighting gave us the Playhouse Square chandelier two years ago, and now the company is making Cleveland even more lit with 1.4 million LED twinkle lights. Strung along East Ninth Street, Public Square, Playhouse Square and around The Q and Progressive Field, the lights will emit their warm glow year-round.
Dig the garden city. Sure, there will be plenty of red, but downtown’s getting a little greener. Scotts Miracle-Gro and Petitti Garden Center are donating 85 planters filled with greenery to liven things up. But when the convention leaves, many of the planters will be permanently installed in the city’s neighborhoods such as Old Brooklyn and Collinwood.
Art works. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s Red Line Rapid got a little artsy in time for the RNC with permanent murals by 18 local, national and international artists — inspired by the diverse winners of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards — along the West Side route to and from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Tower City Center.
