The video game cover is this generation's version of the Wheaties box. So as NBA Live 14 featuring Kyrie Irving and NBA 2K14 with LeBron James go head-to-head(we know which one we're buying), we reflect on a virtual sports legacy as thin as our real one.

In 1995, cover boy Manny Ramirez hit .308 with 31 home runs and 107 RBIs while helping the Indians to their first World Series since 1954. Someone must still own a Sega Genesis so we can relive those '90s good times, right? After Peyton Hillis barreled into fans' hearts with 1,177 rushing yards in 2010, he beat out Aaron Rodgers in fan voting for the Madden NFL cover (and its jinx). The following season was full of injuries, strife and a ticket out of town. Kyrie Irving accomplished what LeBron James never did in a Cavs uniform: Grace a video game cover solo. James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and others headlined NBA 09: The Inside — but even then, he needed superstar help.
