Commander, Coast Guard 9th District
U.S. Coast Guard
Education: Ohio University, bachelor’s degree in education
Toughest Challenge: Battling major depression. My faith and everything I believed about myself was tested. God used that very difficult time to humble me and make me more understanding of others and realize that everyone has a story.
Greatest Inspiration: Jesus Christ
How I Motivate Others: Listen. I meet with every direct report upon initial meeting and at least twice a year to listen to what’s on his or her mind and the challenges he or she is dealing with.
Best Advice: From a crusty chief boatswain mate after I graduated from boot camp: “If you want to be good at what you do, know your job and do it well. Don’t try to fit into someone else’s mold.”
What I’d Tell 16-Year-Old Me: Life is not about the goal; it’s about the process in getting there. Don’t sacrifice your character for any goal.
