While a sea of navy blazers and red ties are set to invade downtown, Clevelanders can take a page from the GOP’s style notebook and adopt a few simple, classic looks to blend into the Republican scene. Local stylists offer tips on what to wear if you’re heading into the political mix.
Lighten up. Sure, we’re battling the sizzling heat, but Kilgore Trout owner Wally Naymon wants us to avoid the temptation to toss on our standard T-shirts and shorts. Consider sporting that navy blazer — but in a cotton, deconstructed style — with a summer-toned collared shirt and khaki slacks or a pair of lightweight jeans. “You still want to look professional and put together,” he says, “but lightweight is the key.”
Watch your feet. Walking Cleveland’s busy streets will be no small task, so make sure your footwear of choice is comfortable — but also on point. Naymon suggests a neutral Frye chukka or one of the low-top sneakers from Magnanni. These high-end kicks can be worn both taking in the sights and at dinner. “They’re really the hottest category of men’s footwear today,” he says.
Pull double-duty. With a jam-packed schedule, the convention might not leave much time for women to change outfits. A midi-length pencil skirt with a tucked-in blouse and cork wedges is the perfect look to blend in whether you’re headed to the Rock Hall or barhopping. “Women should try to be chic and stylish,” says Chrissy Stone, an assistant buyer at Kilgore Trout, “but still keep it sophisticated.”
