With the beaux-arts Heinen’s rotunda, brutalist The 9 tower and modern PNC Center, our civic crossroads at East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue is an architectural melting pot. It got even more diverse this year with the renovation of the 14-story Victorian Schofield Building. Bringing the 114-year-old red brick and terra-cotta gem back to life as a hotel and luxury apartments was no easy feat — especially because metal paneling was added in the ’60s. Over five years, Cleveland Construction removed the facade and used existing architectural elements to recreate ornamental features such as the letters that spell out “Schofield” along the exterior. “There’s a whole generation of Clevelanders who had no idea what was behind those panels,” says David Sawicki, vice president of construction. “Bringing that facade back was like delivering a whole new building to downtown Cleveland.” 2000 E.
