Kids A to Z: Denise Zarrella
Mom to Gianna, 17 months, and Anthony, 4 months
I think pregnant women are gorgeous. Besides the fat ankles with Gianna, I felt like I looked great.
It was love at first sight, even while I felt them growing inside me.
I remember getting Gianna's clothes ready, washing them in that baby detergent, the smell of it. I couldn't wait for her to get here.
Gianna has Down syndrome and had open-heart surgery at 3 months. Once we got over the initial shock, we said, "No matter what her challenges are, we're going to love her to pieces." It's a new life, and we're going to celebrate it. We thank God for her every day.
I'm proof that you're very fertile after you deliver. I figured I'm 37, we'll just see what happens. Three months later we were pregnant again.
I remember Lynna Lai [of Channel 19] telling me, "Denise, when this new baby comes along, you'll realize how much time you have now with just one." I rolled my eyes. I didn't believe her. Now I know exactly what she was talking about.
When people offer to help, they really mean it. You have to take them up on that.
One of the best things a new mom can do is find a mommy group. I joined MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) last year. It was life changing. It's like oxygen for me.
I like straight talk from moms not just about the wonderful times, but also the challenging times of motherhood.
Remember that guy in My Big Fat Greek Wedding who thought Windex was the answer to everything? For me, it's baby wipes. I use them to dust. I use them when I can't shower.
Sometimes, baby wipes are my bath for the day.
