Best Of Cleveland: Beef Jerky

Snap into Backattack Snack's beef jerky.

Former CrossFit trainer, Brian Back was dismayed at the standard jerky — filled with salt and chemicals — he was eating after workouts. So after his father-in-law gifted him a dehydrator, Back began working on a more natural option. After 3 1/2 years of developing a recipe and getting government approval, Backattack Snacks was born. Made with Angus beef, liquid amino and a handful of familiar seasonings, the jerky ($13 for 3 ounces) is a hearty, chewy slab of meat with just enough spices to bring out its earthiness. But the way Back incorporates those spices is top-secret. “We add heat,” says Back, “but the way we do it is unique.” Vegans don’t have to miss out on a satisfying snack. Back has created the Foragers Jerky ($10 for 1 ounce), a vegan option made of portobello mushrooms that packs the same bold punch. backattacksnacks.com
