It seems like a new doughnut shop pops up every week. So Daylight Donuts and Coffee wanted to offer something totally different than its competitors — and, thus, the ice cream-filled doughnut ($2.49 each) was born. “We’re always playing around and trying to come up with the next thing,” says co-owner Matt Gile, who opened the Cleveland Heights spot in January with his younger brother, Trevor, and their dad, Chuck. The unassuming dessert, which looks like a standard custard- or jelly-filled variety from the outside, is filled to order and piped with creamy vanilla soft-serve ice cream. Although the shop also serves coffee concoctions and other ice cream creations, the ice cream-filled doughnut is so popular that some of Daylight’s regulars come in weekly for their sweet fix. “A few people say they wish they’d never tried them,” Gile laughs, “because now they have to come back and get more of them.” 3077 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights, 216-371-0466, daylightcle.com
