Sugar Bowl offers animal-shaped macarons that transform you back to childhood.

The macaron, with its prim and proper circular shape, is a refined, upscale treat. But Sugar Bowl’s Menila Preevanich injects fun into the French pastries at her Willoughby pho and bakery shop. She goes wild with animal shapes such as whimsical vanilla-flavored unicorns ($2.50 each), peach-flavored orange bunnies ($1.95 each) and Oreo-flavored pandas ($2.25 each). “I love pandas,” she says, giggling. Preevanich, who watched YouTube videos to master her techniques, starts the four-hour process every morning at 10 a.m. and is committed to using flavorful ingredients such as pure matcha powder for her green tea macarons ($1.50 each). “You have to make them taste good, too,” she says. “They can’t just be cute.” 34912 Ridge Road, Willoughby, 440-525-5999, sugarbowlwilloughby.com
