Every pedigreed, East Coast-style deli could take a lesson from what’s been going on for the past 30 years behind an unassuming metal door at the corner of East 17th Street and St. Clair Avenue. The sandwiches are huge, service is fast, and the place drips with heart-on-your-sleeve sports allegiance. But here’s where that lesson comes into play: The first time you visit, you already feel like a regular. Call it undiluted Midwest hospitality. The place may not get as much press as its competitor down the street, Slyman’s, but any downtown St. Patrick’s Day reveler worth a shamrock will vouch that the place has a superb corned beef sandwich (and it’s closer to the parade route).
