Eat This Now: Outsiders Pizza

This Cleveland-based frozen pizza company makes under-appreciated pies you'd find in Detroit and Milwaukee.

Neapolitan pizza had its time in the limelight. But for the creators of Outsiders Pizza, a foodie incubator backed by Nestle, they’re dreaming about cheesy slices that reminded them of their Midwestern roots. The frozen food aisle brand, which you can find at Target and Giant Eagle, celebrates hole-in-the-wall, off-the-grid styles — think Detroit and Milwaukee — that remain under-appreciated. We slice up our takes on the two distinct versions.

Detroit Style
With a deep, fluffy crust, this style of pizza is said to be inspired by the Motor City, where autoworkers used the industrial pans they had while working on the assembly line as cooking equipment. The flavors of the BBQ Recipe Pulled Pork & Bacon version get amped up when sitting on the golden, almost crunchy upper crust. The souped-up model goes the extra mile with diced ham, green onions, white cheddar and Wisconsin brick cheese.

Milwaukee Style
This thin-cut version is usually served as a “party cut,” where slices are diced up into squares and battles ensue over the triangular corner pieces. The buttery crust stands up best with the Spicy Sausage & Cheese Curds option. As anyone who’s ever visited Wisconsin knows, those folks know how to do cheese — and on this particular pie, the white cheddar cheese curds add a sharp note to the layers of caramelized onions, peppadew peppers and spicy tomato sauce.
