There’s no need to wait for the weather to break for another taste of the farmers market. Two area markets have moved indoors for the season, meaning you can still get fresh, seasonal produce. The North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square has shifted inside to the Square’s northeast quadrant just west of CVS. It reopens for the season Jan. 9 from 9 a.m. until noon, running every Saturday through March 27. The Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market hosts its first winter market as well, moving inside to the Cretan Center at 3853 W. 168th St. every second Sunday of the month through May. Selections aren’t as extensive as the summer open-air markets, but locavores can still stock up on produce, baked goods, cheese, honey, jams, herbs and more.
New Flavors
As we wrapped up our holiday shopping last month, three local restaurateurs were finalizing their new spots. At press time we were waiting for the official opening announcements of three highly-anticipated restaurants: Hospitality Restaurants’ Rosewood Grille, which is taking over the former Inn at Turner’s Mill spot in Hudson; chef Dante Boccuzzi’s re-creation of his namesake restaurant in the Third Federal Bank building in Tremont; and Chinato, the East Fourth Street brainchild of chef Zack Bruell, who will add Italian cuisine to his Cleveland restaurant repertoire, which now includes Table 45, Parallax and L’Albatros. All were reportedly scheduled to open by mid-December.
East Meets West
It seems whatever the East Side gets, the West Side soon has, too, and vice versa — from exchanges between Melt Bar and Grilled to Big Fun Toys — and now both sides of town have their own Michael Symon joint. Six months after West Siders got their first suburban taste of Symon at Bar Symon, the East Side has its own Iron Chef spot. The B Spot is housed in the former Cold Stone Creamery at Eton in Woodmere and serves a hearty selection of more than 15 burgers under $11, such as the Symon Says burger topped with bologna, coleslaw, whip sauce and American cheese ($8). “The premise behind it is a dive bar with great food,” Symon says. “It’s a place you can bring kids.” The concept is built around the letter “B” with menu items including bar snacks, big salads, bratwurst, bologna and “bad a**” milkshakes using Mitchell’s Ice Cream, plus lots of artisan beer.
Twice as Nice
While we’re on the topic of expansion to the East Side, we recently noticed Vine & Bean has added to its menu once again to offer another Heather Haviland signature from Lucky’s: the house-made Reuben loaded with corned beef, sauerkraut and fresh Thousand Island dressing. It’s the sandwich Guy Fieri raved about when he stopped at the Tremont restaurant to film an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
