All but two of the restaurant’s aluminum-and-laminate tables are occupied. “Slow today?” asks the regular, without a hint of sarcasm. “It’s Monday,” his waitress commiserates. This is the legend that is Slyman’s. Most days, every table is packed at this tiny place famous for a corned beef sandwich piled so high that servers routinely leave extra bread, wax paper and a bag so you can make a second one for the road. There is other food on the menu, but none of it has the same mystique. Taking on this sandwich is a rite of passage. While you could join those in line each noon and order the behemoth to go, first-timers should come in at 11:45 a.m., grab a seat, and enjoy the show.
