The Case for Carr

Joe Tait may be the voice of the Cavaliers, but Austin Carr is its soul. If it were up to us, we'd let Carr handle the analyst duties for every televised Cavaliers game, not just the ones on WUAB Channel 43. We've got nothing against Scott Williams, play-by-play announcer Michael Reghi's wingman for games that air on FSN Ohio, but Carr's the complete package. The man's knowledge of the game is deep. A former Cavaliers player, Carr dissects defenses and explains the concept of 'kamikaze' foulers with glee. But it's his one-liners, which seem simple at face value but exude Zen-like wisdom once you reflect upon them, that make Carr our Buddha of basketball commentary. Things like 'If the Cavaliers score 100 points, they have a good chance of winning this game' and 'Whoever is playing the best defense at the end of the game will win the game' remind us of Casey Stengel's famous line, 'Good pitching will always stop good hitting, and vice versa.' And on a night when things are really clicking on court, Carr will let out a chuckle when LeBron slams a tomahawk dunk or Z ('the big guy' Carr calls him) seems to walk over everyone into the paint and score. Emotionally, he's right there with us on the edge of his seat, and that's why we love him.
