Watching Emily Harpel spin threads of sugar into a vibrant, fluffy cloud of cotton candy is a spectacular show to behold.
While planning her own wedding, the 27-year-old started Art of Sucre in 2016 after finding inspiration across Instagram and Pinterest boards. But she wanted to put her own spin on the creative carnival treat.
“When you bite into fair cotton candy, it almost has that gritty, you-have-to-brush-your-teeth feeling,” she says. “Mine doesn’t have that.”
Harpel creates a lighter-than-air version by removing preservatives and combining a number of extracts with granulated organic sugar and natural food coloring.
She offers more than 20 dynamic flavors ($3-$6) such as apple cinnamon, champagne, pink lemonade, root beer and orange bourbon.
The treat is best eaten straight off the cone after it’s been freshly spun from her mobile cart and topped with Nerds, Pop Rocks or edible glitter. “It gets as wild and crazy as you want,” says Harpel. 330-819-6220, artofsucre.com
