Best Of CLE: Plant-Based Gelato
The naturally sweet Doozy Pots from Wonderlab are a frozen dessert that makes your head spin.
Take the Banana Cinnamon Date Swirl ($6.99 per pint): There’s no circus-peanut banana flavor here as its sweetness is natural, with the date acting like a caramel swirl. It’s one of the first flavors Kirsten Sutaria, a former product developer for Ben & Jerry’s, created in Cleveland alongside her husband and co-owner Karl when launching Wonderlab’s Doozy Pots in 2019.
“A few places have been doing liquid hemp milk for coffee, but it’s not been used in secondary products,” says Sutaria, whose background is in food science. “Hemp is a sustainable plant that grows quickly, and it’s not an allergen in the classic sense.”
Organic oat flour and hemp seed oil help create the perfect creaminess, and like with the decision to use hemp in the first place, Sutaria’s instincts are spot-on with flavors. Try the Coffee & Cookies ($6.99 per pint), which uses whole coffee beans milled into a paste.
“Rather than using an extract, we use the whole coffee bean,” Sutaria says. “It gives a very pure coffee flavor.” 802-272-5432, wonderlabdoozy.com
