The truck stops here.
When two food truck chefs — Steve Sabo of the Orange Truk and Juan Gonzalez of Wholly Frijoles — joined forces two years ago, they didn’t roll out another mobile eatery.
Instead they parked a kitchen inside a brick-and-mortar spot in a small corner of a Norton plaza for The Funky Truckeria, a 30-seat restaurant that serves up flavorful Mexican-inspired creations.
“We just hoped it was going to pay its own bills,” Sabo says. “It’s turned into a little destination for people now.” You’ll find us cruising down Interstate 77 for the chorizo funky balls ($4) filled with spicy sausage, goat cheese and Monterey Jack cheese, and topped with poblano sauce, queso fresco and cilantro.
The duo’s 14 tacos include the jerk chicken ($3.75) with shredded cabbage, jerk sauce, mango pico de gallo, cilantro and lime. “You get the smokiness, you get the spice, a little bit of the sweet. It just blends really well,” Sabo says. “People come from all over just because they want that taco.”
