There is no phone in the booth at Waterloo Road and Calcutta Avenue, but it definitely is creating conversation in the Waterloo Arts District. That’s exactly what curator Allison Lukacsy dialed up when the first exhibit opened in the Phone Gallery in 2014. Each month a new artist — from a retired Cleveland Institute of Art sculpture professor to a high school sketch artist — gets a chance to spark some dialogue in the 11-by-22-by-6-inch cubby. Bright yellow paint and LED lights with a motion sensor at night means it’s always open and less intimidating for those who find galleries too stuffy. It’s also a call to artists, like this month’s sci-fi painting exhibit by emerging surrealist Darcy Martinez. “It gives people the ability to think of themselves as being creative and say, ‘Yes I am an artist,’ ” Lukacsy says.
