The Art of the Actress
HOW DID ART BECOME IMPORTANT TO YOU?
I always painted and drew as a child, but I never really did anything with art again until 18 or 19 years ago when I went through a terrible divorce and lost everything. I was about as low as anyone could be, for a very good reason. I could not stop painting or drawing. Literally, I became obsessed with it. I’d stay up half the night. However stressed I got, if I painted or drew, I could cope with it.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEDIUM IN WHICH TO WORK?
I love all the mediums, but watercolor is where I started, and I have a technique that is very spontaneous. But I also love oils and pastels, and I love sculpting.
HOW DID YOUR TRADEMARK OPEN HEART DESIGN COME ABOUT?
I did a whole campaign for women’s heart health, and I did a double open heart and really loved it. It reminded me of my mom’s message: If your heart is open, love will find its way in. And so I made a necklace that I wore on Dancing With the Stars. One night at a dinner party, there were randomly people from Akron there — the people from Kay Jewelers. “We make jewelry in a big way,” they said, “and we just think you have something very special there.”
