The spirit of discovery is strong at Sabor Miami Cafe.
It’s not just because there are few places in Cleveland where you can sample Caribbean-inspired green plantain tostones with refried beans, cheese and pico de gallo ($8.75) or tuck in to a serving of Peruvian salchipapas ($9), a rich street food of spiced french fries, sausage, a ketchup-mayo sauce and a bright punch of cilantro.
It’s because a host of lesser-known Latin fusion favorites are served here, in a tropical-toned Old Brooklyn eatery that makes adventurous eating as welcoming as your friend’s kitchen. Helmed by Honduras-born artist and chef Mariela Paz, the restaurant offers a menu of homestyle meals influenced by Cuban, South American and Mayan cuisines in a cozy storefront splashed in Paz’s vibrant portraits.
Settle in to discover comfort food done a new way, from the Calle 8 torta ($8.99), a Latin-inspired pork or chicken flatbread sandwich topped with pico de gallo and potato sticks, to the baleadas mixta ($4.50), a quesadilla-esque Honduran tortilla filled with refried beans, avocado, white cheese and pickled red onions.
“In our country, everything is around the food,” says Paz.
