If you’re looking for a stellar sandwich, then you’ve come to the right place when you walk into Gourmand’s Deli. This breakfast and lunch spot in Valley View has been in operation for 23 years, and over that time Greg Thomson, who co-owns the deli with his wife, Andrea, has cultivated a menu of 57 sandwiches. From breakfast croissant handhelds to vegetarian offerings, there’s something for every taste.
Most of its sandwiches are meat-centric and served hot — think pulled pork, roast beef, chicken and turkey. But there are exceptions. “We do a couple of cold sandwiches in every category, because some people just don’t want hot stuff,” says Thomson. And while he’s learned a thing or two over the years about how to a build a fantastic sandwich, he understands even more about how to make sure that sandwich travels well. Butcher paper expertly cradles each sammie while the accompanying pickle comes in its own plastic bag.
“I think it’s gross when you go to a restaurant and get a nasty, wet pickle all over your chicken sandwich,” he says. A handful of candy or gum in each white paper bag also shows how much pride Thomson takes in serving his customers. “We’ve been doing that forever,” he says.
