By now, it’s no secret where the most authentic — and delicious — tacos in The Land can be found. Cradled in warm corn tortillas, La Plaza’s celebrated handhelds are simple perfection, filled with your choice of one of eight meats (start with the tangy, toothsome al pastor) adorned with onions, cilantro and house-made salsas at the salad bar in the front of this West Side supermarket’s taqueria.
The good news? These tacos travel well, as do any of the other rich offerings on La Plaza’s menu, from the massive burrito grande to the daily specials announced on Facebook, such as pozole or Mexican meatballs called albondigas. For delivery, your order arrives with individually packaged containers of cilantro, onions and three salsa varieties: the serrano pepper-based red salsa, pico de gallo and salsa verde.
“I still love the quality,” says manager Cristina Gonzalez. “I get the salad burrito, for example, and when I get home, the mix of fresh veggies inside, the rice, it’s perfect.” Though many love the bright bustle of eating in the taqueria, La Plaza enjoys a steady stream of takeout orders. “We’re still cooking with the same love and dedication,” says Gonzalez.
Try This: The Tacos Combo Lunch ($10) comes with three carefully assembled tacos, refried beans, seasoned rice, lime wedges and side containers of cilantro, onions and salsas.
