Why she’s interesting … She got where she is today (a top 20 market) through the kind of hard work not exactly typical of young college students — she drove an 18-wheeler.
How’d that happen? … Looking to pay her way through college at the University of South Carolina, she took a job unloading trucks for FedEx. When a driving position for more money opened, she jumped at it.
The lesson … “My grandmother always said, ‘You can do anything. You can’t help it that you don’t have this or you don’t have that, but if you’re willing to work hard and pray about it, you can do anything.’ ”
What gets her up at 1:45 a.m. … Four alarm clocks, as well as a television, phone and light all on a timer. “If you were a fly on the wall, it would probably scare you.”
Her roots … She was born and raised in a small town named Newberry, S.C.
She misses … Sweet tea, grits and family
Taming her Southern accent … By sixth grade, Gill aspired to be on TV and sound like people on it. “I would imitate people I saw and record myself reading the newspaper. The words that sounded country I would practice them until they sounded like the people in the big city.”
