Shawn M. Riley

Chairman, McDonald Hopkins LLC

Education: Juris doctor, Case Western Reserve School of Law; bachelor’s degree, Kent State University

How I Approach My Day: As an opportunity. An opportunity to do great legal work for my clients; an opportunity to make a mark in the community; and an opportunity to enjoy my family and friends.

Favorite Quote: “Recognition should not be the objective of your actions, but the result of your actions.”

My Leadership Style: Delegation and trust. I have tried to hire and promote talented people and then provide them with the opportunity to do their jobs, grow in their positions and become leaders themselves. I try as hard as I can not to micromanage.

An Important Lesson I Learned: When dealing with people working for you, or when dealing with your children, praise publicly but correct privately.

Outside of Work You’ll Find Me: Cooking for family and friends, golfing (poorly) or debating books, history and/or politics with groups of friends over lunch or drinks

A Cleveland Spot I Recommend: Sapphire Creek Winery and Gardens or Orchid House Winery. Both classy places with great food. Also Sara’s Place.
