MISSION & PROGRAMS

Legal Aid’s mission is to secure justice, equity and access to opportunity for and with people who have low income through passionate legal representation and advocacy for systemic change. Unlike criminal cases, the right to an attorney is not guaranteed for people facing eviction, domestic violence, consumer scams or other civil legal issues. This often means people facing serious legal challenges must navigate the justice system alone. To close this justice gap, Legal Aid provides legal representation and advice to people so they can protect their homes, health, safety and financial security. By providing legal services at no cost to clients with low incomes, Legal Aid helps ensure fairness for all in the justice system — regardless of how much money a person has. Legal Aid also educates the community on their rights and works with partners to promote lasting solutions to the root causes of poverty. Nationally, every $1 invested in civil legal aid returns $7 to the community by protecting individual income, reducing the need for emergency services and boosting local economies. Founded in 1905, The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland is the fifth-oldest legal aid organization in the U.S. and serves Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Lorain Counties.
