This year, CIFF43’s “Welcome” campaign incorporates bright, color-blocked cross-hatching. To commemorate the event’s evolving aesthetics, we picked three favorite fliers from festivals past.

CIFF1: 1977
The first festival’s surreal, graphic poster heralded the fest’s artistic daring, conjuring a curious cinephile gazing into a engine-red shadowbox, a tiny Terminal Tower among the celluloid frames.

CIFF10: 1986
In the ‘80s, the fest’s posters favored black and white, such as the 10th festival’s design, a wide, monochrome eye framed by Fosse-esque outstretched palms

CIFF40: 2017
For CIFF’s 40th anniversary, this lime design paid homage to 40 years of logos, from 2000’s popcorn-wielding Guardian of Transportation to 1989’s play on the Greek sculpture Discobolus.
