Help Dad feel like Vulcan with Michael Symon’s new cookbook Playing With Fire ($30, Clarkson Potter), an introduction to live-fire cooking on grills, smokers and living room fireplaces. The 239-page book catalogues more than 70 recipes such as Mabel’s pastrami, campfire mole chicken and fireplace root vegetables with how-to tips, advice on equipment, profiles of revered pitmasters and anecdotes from behind the grills of Lola, Mabel’s BBQ and more. “Cooking with fire is something that’s always been kind of the backbone of cooking in our restaurants and how I cook at home,” Symon says.
