Back stroke

Jan. 16, 2009 | 5:00 AM

Our back is one of our staunchest supporters.

It’s time we did a few things for it:
- Lift correctly. Let your legs take the lead. Bend at your knees, not at your waist, to pick up any and all objects — including a sheet of paper. Keep heavy items you are lifting close to your body and avoid twisting.

- Maintain a healthy weight. Extra pounds, particularly around the belly, can strain your lower back.

- Condition your muscles. Aerobics stretches and strengthens the muscles that support your lower back.

- Be smartly stylish. Wear flat footwear or shoes with low heels and good arch support.–– LF
