Best Of CLE: Small-Batch Bookshelf

If you are fed up with big-box stores’ generic coffee table books, check out Nomadic Bookshelf, an online art and photography bookstore that does occasional pop-ups. The store started in Boston in 2013 because owner Catie Moore felt the city lacked places to purchase art and photography books.

Relocated to Cleveland in 2014, Nomadic Bookshelf offers an ever-changing assortment of small-press books, many of them in get-them-before-they’re-gone editions of 250 or fewer. Titles have included Leviathan ($55), featuring Morgan Ashcom’s photos of the Southeast Ohio rural skate mecca Skatopia, or The Braddocks ($22) by Agnes Bolt, which examines the people of two towns named Braddock, one in North Dakota and the other in post-industrial Pennsylvania.

Moore sees the books in her store as mini exhibitions, empowering the artists who make them. “Being able to question the model of what a book is, or what it looks like or what it should be, really has been put back into the hands of the artist,” says Moore. “And the physical manifestation of that is really fascinating.” nomadicbookshelf.com
