Night in jail
At the Old Vermilion Jailhouse Bed & Breakfast, it's good to do a turn in the slammer. Built in 1935 as a library, the historic building operated as a police station from 1958 to 1998 and now houses a masterpiece of kitsch lodging ($289 per night). Owner Markos Paradissis transformed what used to be a fully functioning jail into a master bedroom with two themed bedroom cells, a shower cell and a bathroom cell. Even the jail cell mattresses have a criminal flair - Paradissis uses the exact model that Bernie Madoff had in his home before he got locked up behind bars. The wall of one themed cell is painted with a Shawshank Redemption-style breakout scene, and in another nod to the movie, Paradissis keeps a Rita Hayworth poster in the entryway. "Our first guest actually stayed here 30 years ago," says Paradissis. "I think he enjoyed it a lot better this time." 691 Grand St., Vermilion, 440-963-5245, jailbed.com
