Best of Cleveland 2015: Book Bike

Librarians are biking around to give Clevelanders a good read.

The Cleveland Public Library has found a new way to pedal literacy to the masses. In May, the Cleveland Public Library unveiled its Book Bike, an adult-sized bright orange tricycle that holds 50 to 60 volumes and is equipped with a helmet and safety vest for its rider. Librarians curate their offerings for each event they wheel to — cookbooks for Walnut Wednesday and cancer research and advice books for the VeloSano cancer research fundraiser — so you'll never get the same read twice. But this isn't just a single-speed service. For those who prefer e-readers, the bike is also a Wi-Fi hot spot, plus newbies can sign up for a library card. "It's got that retro look. People think it's the ice cream truck," says youth services librarian Maria Estrella. "As long as they come closer to the bike and check out our books, I'm OK with that." cpl.org
