Music, dance and verse intertwine in 20th-century American poet and Karamu alumnus Langston Hughes’ gospel musical retelling of the birth of Jesus. All costumes and dance motifs in this annual Karamu production reflect African themes, providing a unique depiction of the Nativty. The production is dedicated to the late Mike Malone, who died last December. In 1979, the then-Karamu artistic director revived “Black Nativity” after finding the script, along with other early Hughes works, in a filing cabinet at Karamu.
