Bottoms Up

The 78th Street Studios transforms its lower level into an artists' sanctuary.

Crystal and glass jewelry catch the light within the recently renovated lower ramp level of 78th Street Studios. The former industrial space is now home to new galleries that showcase the artistry of rustic metalwork and upcycled home furnishings. A new central space hosts Northcoast Promotions' artisan market during the popular Third Fridays, in which more than 50 of the building's galleries open for a night of art, music and food (this month's event is Jan. 16).

After four months of rehabbing sections of the 20,000-square-foot ramp level, the Gordon Square Arts District complex opened the galleries and market space late last year. Tenants added new walls, glossy and stained floor treatments, an LED lighting system and a fresh coat of paint.

As the renovation continues this year, around 15 more arts businesses are set to fill the rest of the ramp level, including ArtNeo, a gallery that showcases Northeast Ohio artists. Here's a look at some of the new galleries.
