Dominique Moceanu Remembers Team USA’s Historic Gymnastics Win 20 Years Later

The Northeast Ohioan tells us what that gold medal meant to the future of women’s gymnastics.

This Summer Olympics marks the 20th anniversary of Team USA’s first team gold medal win in women’s gymnastics at the 1996 Atlanta games. Northeast Ohio resident Dominique Moceanu, who was on the team, talks to us about the legacy.

That win changed the landscape for U.S. women’s gymnastics for years to come. Girls competing in [the Rio] Olympics were inspired by our team. We were that generation that showed the world all of us women could do it. We had our archrivalries with Russia and Romania for so many years, and it had never been done.
