Cause and Effect
As a former Clevelander, I continue to care about the city and its future. Erick Trickey’s article in the March edition (“Tear It Down”) laments the problems facing Cleveland and suggests tearing down decaying homes. It’s a good start, but the underlying reason for the decay must be addressed before any redevelopment can begin. The city core has been affected for years by thugs and the crime that comes with them. Citizens have left, moving to Lakewood, Shaker Heights and Garfield Heights to avoid the problems of the city. Now those suburbs are no longer as safe as they once were. What’s next, moving away to Lorain, Toledo or even Pittsburgh? The continuing culture of crime must be fought before the city ever recovers.

Yes, It’s a Coincidence
Erick Trickey’s article on Cuyahoga County’s decaying houses was well done, and Billy Delfs’ photographs alone told a lot. One observation: Is it just coincidence that so many of the houses are predominantly green?

More Hyduk, Please
How I enjoyed “Born and Bread” (February 2010), not only for the Cleveland history in the article but for the heart John Hyduk showed in his writing. I’d like to read more stories from him.
