Loreto Greve Brings Back the Romance of Photography

Chilean artist Loreto Greve uses classic photography techniques to capture romantic images during her Cleveland Print Room residency.

Loreto Greve was biking along the Veterans Memorial Bridge when she noticed a flock of birds circling buildings nearby. Struck by the contrast, the Chilean artist captured the pillowy clouds and abstract birds in flight against the rigid lines of the factory. “It’s a combination of the masculine and the feminine,” she says. As one of six international artists-in-residence for the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion initiative, Greve spent two months photographing the city for a Nov. 11-23 exhibition at the Cleveland Print Room. The show features the 34-year-old’s black-and-white photographs and lithographs as well as works by local photographers and printmakers. As part of her process, Greve used 35 mm film and developed her prints in a traditional darkroom. She hopes the romanticism of the format comes through in the images. “I want people to discover something different in the picture.
