We Tried It (2)

"The Drive." Even almost 20 years later, Browns fans can still feel John Elway's right hand clenching our hearts. But thanks to ESPN's NFL2K5 video game, redemption can be ours. Along with its normal game modes, NFL2K5 allows players to relive or rewrite the "25 Greatest Moments in NFL History" — including No. 11, "The Drive." So what if it's only virtual revenge? It still tastes sweet. Of course, we all know about the Broncos' 98-yard touchdown drive and the overtime field goal. But not in my house, damn it! Here, Elway drops back from the Broncos' 2-yard line into the end zone. The protection is great as he searches for an open receiver. But even as two Broncos appear to break free from their defenders, Elway stands transfixed — dumbfounded, confused even — until it happens. From Elway's blind side, the defensive end (we'll imagine it's Sam Clancy, wearing No. 93) spins free from his block, charges and plants Mr. Hall of Famer in the ground. "The Safety." Yeah, that just feels right.
