“Fear the Roo” ... It’s not just for the Mid-American Conference anymore. Though the University of Akron won’t be seeing bowl game glory this year, at least the team’s marsupial mascot, Zippy, has been grinding it out week after week. Capital One once again spent the fall pitting a sampling of the nation’s plushy, giant-eyed college team mascots against each other in an 11-week, head-to-head online popularity contest, which will reach its conclusion at the credit card giant’s Jan. 1 bowl game in Orlando. Northeast Ohioans propelled the carefree kangaroo to the finals by helping him put the squeeze on Syracuse University’s Otto the orange, leaving the University of Minnesota’s Goldy Gopher the last one to beat on the road to mascot glory.
