Block Bros at Home
The Vibe: Opened in 1972, this high-end Pepper Pike institution has a cozy feel with beds piled high with stacks of fluffy pillows, Tibetan sheepskin throws and cloud-like comforters. A popular clearance room in the back offers big discounts.
What It’s Known For: While it also carries furniture, lamps, glassware and gifts, it’s the luxury bed and bath linens that keep customers coming back. Everything, from sheets to bath towels, is hypoallergenic, chemical-free and made by family companies. “We know the owners and the workers; we meet them face-to-face,” says owner Carolyne Bloch. 30495 Pinetree Road, Pepper Pike, 216-360-8600, blockbrosathome.com
Cleveland Lighting
The Vibe: The sprawling Lyndhurst and Fairlawn showrooms are more like a friend’s stylish home than a lighting emporium. Instead of displaying options in rows on shelves, pendants dangle above kitchen islands, outdoor fixtures adorn brick walls and bathroom sconces appear next to mirrors. “We show application so people can connect the dots and make decisions much easier,” says owner Marty Bursky.
What It’s Known For: Having a hard time deciding on the right style for your space? The staffers are indispensable resources with most coming from the design industry. 5540 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst, 440-461-9081; 2930 W. Market St., Fairlawn, 330-576-4444, clevelandlighting.com
Pavilion Home & Floral
The Vibe: The Cleveland Heights space’s neutral palette is the perfect backdrop for its eclectic mix of mid-to-high-end contemporary furniture, patterned accent pillows and floral textiles, with plenty of antique art and objects sprinkled throughout.
What It’s Known For: You might stop in for the custom upholstery or exclusive selection of high-end lamps, but don’t be surprised if you end up hiring the business to do the design work for you. “A lot of people end up asking us for design services just because they like the way we have things pulled together in the store,” says owner Leslie Marceau. 12433 Cedar Road, Cleveland Heights, 216-795-5488, pavilioncle.com
Sapphire Pear
The Vibe: This Rocky River design firm and showroom has a fun, whimsical aesthetic you won’t find anywhere else: Think animal-print chairs, patterned throw pillows and quirky accessories from designers such as Dana Gibson, Bungalow 5 and local artists like Lakewood-based Lauren HB Studio.
What It’s Known For: Vibrant upholstery by CR Laine Designs in every hue of the rainbow and colorful decor pieces make it a standout. “You’re never going to find a gray linen sofa here,” says owner and head designer Barrie Spang. 19361 Detroit Road, Rocky River, 216-377-1965, sapphirepear.com
Spaces Consignment
The Vibe: This high-end consignment shop is full of inviting vignettes arranged with pieces such as modern luxury desks by Donghia, gilded antique mirrors and abstract paintings. “It runs from antique to midcentury modern to contemporary,” says owner Trina Miller. “It’s for every style, every taste and every budget.”
What It’s Known For: With inventory sourced from the highest-end consignors, it’s not unheard of to find steals such as a $10,000 Baker dining set for $800. 3355 Richmond Road, Suite 211, Beachwood, 216-378-4900, spacesconsignment.com
