Rating the Suburbs - Avon
Al “Bubba” Baker, 52
co-owner of Bubba’s Q World Famous Bar-B-Q and Catering
This place isn’t about Bubba Baker. While that’s flattering, that can’t be what the business is about. It’s about the food. I’ll be glad to talk to you about your favorite pass-rush move, but those days are done.
I know this sounds corny, but some things happen and you’re not in control of your destiny. We were living in an apartment in Westlake when my wife found her dream house in Avon. Her eyes welled up, and like most men, I caved in.
When it snows, it’s like a postcard. It’s what I needed. Our house is surrounded by trees.
I read a book called The Power of Less by Leo Babauta. I had to make a list of what was most important to me and I realized that No. 1 was my health. I was 377 pounds. I realized, I’m going to die. It was something inside of me that clicked.
I lost 58 pounds. It was the hardest thing I ever did in my life.
You ask anybody in Avon, the two places you’ll see me every day are Heinen’s and Costco. Costco has the best meat program. Walk through their meat department. They don’t play.
Nowhere is perfect, and I realize Avon has some cultural challenges, but I love where I live. Avon turned out to be the best place for me.
Don’t you think you’re going to drop your 16-year-old boy off here and I’m going to change his life because I played professional football. It never works when parents try to get their kids a job here.
