A Bar or Bat mitzvah is an important celebration in the life of a 13-year-old Jewish boy or girl. The event is the culmination of nearly a year of studying on the part of the teenager, and the religious ceremony typically takes place at a synagogue, usually on a Friday or Saturday.
After the service, guests can be invited to a separate party at a location like a restaurant or banquet hall, and these events can often vary in scope and expense, much like a wedding, says Ginny Sukenik, event planner for Landerhaven. “No matter if you’re invited to the service or the service and a party, a gift is very appropriate,” she notes. “It can be anything from religious meaning to something popular with the boys and girls or gift cards.”
