A few days before the world’s best professional golfers teed off at the 2018 Masters, Chagrin Falls’ Morris made a name for herself at that same Augusta National Golf Club, placing third in the Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals. At just 15, the Laurel sophomore has already competed in the Girls Junior PGA Championship, placed sixth overall in the Ohio Division II State Golf Championship and has her sights set on competing at a Division I university.
Fashion Forward: Golfers are often recognized as much for their distinctive fashion as for their game. Morris is no exception. “I have these crazy bright pink shorts,” she laughs. “If I had 20 pairs, I would wear them every day. They brighten my game and encourage me to be the best golfer I can be.”
Course Correction: Forget poor form or an erratic swing. Morris says the common mistake golfers make is with their attitude, not their clubs. “I see so many people on the course smacking their clubs down and getting angry,” she says. “You need to enjoy the sport, see golf as a privilege and just calm down.”
Links Equality: LPGA star Brittany Lincicome became the sixth woman to play on the PGA Tour this summer, a development Morris would like to see continue. “Women should be able to play with the men, on the same courses and with the same yardages,” she says. “That would be a big step up for women’s golf, and we will rise to the challenge.”
Perfect Putt-Putt: If she had the chance, Morris would design the most epic miniature golf hole imaginable. “First, you’d have to putt over a huge mountain, complete a drop down shot to a waterfall, and in the background there would be a beautiful ocean,” she says. “But no sand traps. I hate sand traps.”
Golfing Cyborg: Morris wouldn’t mind adopting a few choice shots from the pros. “Jordan Spieth’s short game is crazy good, so I would steal his chip and his putt,” she says. “I would definitely take Rory McIlroy’s drive. He hits the ball so far!”
Globe Trotter: Outside of golf, Morris enjoys the basics: hanging out with friends and family. But she also has her sights set on seeing as much of the world as possible. “A few years ago, my family went to Israel, England and France,” she says. “There’s so much more I want to see.”
