When it came time for Larry Nehring to ride away from the headless horseman in the finale of the Lantern Theatre’s A Cold, Creepy Reading of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow last year, the actor playing Ichabod Crane was missing one thing: a horse. So he grabbed a kindergarten-sized metal chair from the front row and galloped away from his ghostly pursuer. “I looked like a daddy longlegs trying to ride a horse,” laughs the 6-foot-4-inch performer. The cast only rehearses twice for this script-in-hand reading with minimal costumes and props, so it’s filled with improvised comedy and frivolity: Crane pines for his unrequited love as a folk band croons “Happy Together” by the Turtles. Lacking heat and running water, the barn at Canal Corners Farm and Market serves as the lone spooky set piece for the 1820 classic, which runs for its second year over Halloween weekend. “The more it gets into darkness, [the barn] really gets a kind of creepy, out-in-the-woods-alone feel,” says Nehring. “You really feel like you’re transported back.” Oct. 28 and 29, 7 p.m., Canal Corners Farm and Market, 10901 Tinkers Creek Road, Valley View, 216-401-5131, lanterntheatreohio.com
