Prosperity Social Club in Tremont offers a traditional, Old World style during fish fry season.
Having been in business for over 85 years, Prosperity Social Club has been featured on the Travel Channel, and is known for its Lenten Fish Fry-days featuring its Hungarian stuffed cabbage, which was recently included in the New York Times “23 Best American Dishes of 2023”.
“We honor history, above all, especially with the aesthetic and the feel of the restaurant,” says Jeffrey Siefer, general manager of Prosperity Social Club.
Established in the 1930s, Prosperity’s barroom has deep-rooted connections to the Tremont neighborhood, where immigrants from Eastern Europe had established their presence within the community. The enduring working-class character is reflected in Prosperity's unpolished aesthetics, straightforward hospitality and the renowned stuffed cabbage rolls – a signature dish adorned with a savory sauce blending paprika, sour cream and sauerkraut.
Open to the public, Prosperity uses the term "social club" more as a figurative expression, embodying a distinctive demeanor and attitude rather than exclusive membership. The ambiance is enriched with Art Deco influences, complemented by dark chestnut walls and vintage beer memorabilia that evoke Cleveland nostalgia.
Although Prosperity no longer serves 16 oz. fishbowls of beer like the original owner, Stan Dembowski, was once known for in 1938, the restaurant offers a selection of 16 fancy stouts, sours and gueuze.
Some notable items on this year’s fish fry menu include white Haddock, creamy coleslaw, cheddar mac & cheese, potato pierogies and New England clam chowder. The restaurant also offers vegan and vegetarian options, such as their vegetable curry and sunshine salad.
Guests can also choose from a selection of cocktails, including the Aphrodite, which is made up of fig-infused vanilla vodka, disaronno amaretto, pear juice, brown sugar, and lemon.
