Shelly Svonavec’s work is all about expression. With COVID-19 restrictions in place last year, Svonavec decided to test out her creativity in a different way than her usual medium of painting. After spending some time working with polymer clay, she made the switch to stoneware clay, which she began firing into a kiln. She made a lot of pieces such as her ceramic totem 005 ($75), a playfully shaped wall hanging with a connected hand-tied tassel.
“This is something different that you can add to your wall,” she says. “It draws the viewer in and really inspires them to think differently.” The top ceramic part of the piece is a circular avocado-like shape complete with black spots while the hanging tassel is hand-tied to the ceramic figure, giving the hanging a mysterious and whimsical addition.
“This piece is a mixture of me trying something new along with working on some ideas I’ve developed over time,” Svonavec says. The totem is part of a 14-piece ceramic collection, all of which are uniquely shaped wall hangings. “These pieces have the perfect balance between playfulness and craftmanship,” she says. svonastudio.com
