When Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game returns to Cleveland July 9, Sandy Alomar Jr.’s thoughts will flash back to the 1997 All-Star Classic held at then-Jacobs Field. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tribe catcher hit a two-run homer off San Francisco’s Shawn Estes, propelling the American League to a 3-1 win and earning him the game’s MVP Award. “It was like a movie script,” says Alomar, now the Indians’ first base coach. “My first two swings, I was trying to hit the moon. After that, I was just trying to make contact. When I hit that homer, chills were going through my body.” It was one of six All-Star Game appearances for Alomar, who hopes to witness another magic moment this year at Progressive Field. “You feel a responsibility to have a good showing for your home fans,” he says. “I hope someone on our team has an opportunity to do what I did.” 2401 Ontario St., Cleveland, 216-420-4487, clevelandindians.com
