Camping Cleveland: Atwood Lake Delights Boaters And Fishers

Winding through nearly 3,000 acres of forest, this man-made reservoir built in 1936 feels especially enormous when you climb the 65-foot-tall observation tower near the welcome center for a bird’s-eye view. Campers can pitch a tent in primitive, secluded lots ($31 per night) or choose a number of vacation homes ($130 per night) and lakeside cabins ($95 per night) to relax in before heading to the lake for days’ worth of activities.

The Atwood Marina offers pontoon and kayak rentals, but the lake is also popular for sailboats since there’s a 25-horsepower limit. “You’re not contending with a lot of the bigger boat traffic and a lot of the waves that you would have in some of the bigger lakes,” says Adria Bergeron, marketing and public affairs administrator at the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy, which manages the lake.

A midnight kayaking trip ranks among the most popular experiences, as boaters are led out onto the water with solar-powered lamps. And while live music and movie events run throughout the summer, there is also the Lighthouse Bistro, where guests can dine on Asian, Italian and Southern fare while watching the sun set across the water. “We really have a variety of whatever suits you,” says Bergeron.
