Cavs Tap Into 2000s Nostalgia With Return of Classic Wine and Gold Uniforms

Cleveland Cavaliers fans are going to be having flashbacks of big men like Anderson Varejao and Zydrunas Ilgauskas working in the paint like they did in the 2000s, but this time it will be Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen donning the deep navy blue, wine and gold uniform.

In partnership with Nike, the Cavs are celebrating their 55th season by paying homage to their past with the return of the classic jersey, aligned with a rendition of the court that so many of us watched LeBron James grow up and dominate on, with the iconic Cavs logo with the wine basketball and sword.

The uniforms have retro motifs and the same classic slanted font with a gold outline. The shorts feature wine and gold trim with the classic “C” logo. 

Some fans might recall that the Cavs wore these jerseys when James scored the final 25 points in the double-overtime win over the Detroit Pistons, helping send the Cavs to the NBA Finals in 2007.

These jerseys and the current core might be the perfect match-up. If you are superstitious, the Cavs went on to win 66 games with these jerseys in the 2008-2009 season, and the team's current core just came off a 64-win season themselves. 

This won’t be the only rush of nostalgia that fans get to enjoy this season. The team plans to sell a collection of the throwback jerseys, hoodies, t-shirts and more comfortable clothing that will make you want to show off your Cleveland pride at the games and throughout the city. 

Cleveland plays eight home games this season in the throwback jersey and three away, including their Christmas Day matchup against the New York Knicks. Other top throwback-jersey match-ups come against the Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors and even the King himself, when the Lakers come to town on Jan. 28.
