78th Street Studios celebrates 25 years of bringing fine art to Cleveland.

Arts & Culture | By Lydia Koszegi

When Dan Bush bought a century-old brick warehouse in Gordon Square in July 2001, he had no arts background — he was sharing the building with a countertop maker and a bingo hall. Twenty-five years later, 78th Street Studios is Northeast Ohio's largest art and design complex, with more than 170,000 square feet of galleries, recording studios and event spaces.

  • Deep Roots: The 1905 building housed the Baker Motor Vehicle Company and later American Greetings' headquarters until the 1980s. Illustrator Derek Hess — whose work hangs in the Louvre and the Rock Hall — was already working there when Bush arrived, and still keeps his gallery in the building.

  • Third Friday: Bush's 2007 open-house experiment drew more than 1,000 guests and became the monthly Third Friday event, now a Cleveland staple featuring more than 80 artists.

  • Bush: "We've created a very cohesive and supportive community. I'm here every day. I even met my wife, Hilary Gent, here, who runs Hedge Gallery in the building."

What's Next: Bush plans to build more studios next year to meet demand for artist space. First comes the party — an outdoor 25th-anniversary celebration July 11 with live music, food, vendors and art displays.

Cleveland Magazine is releasing a new podcast.

Arts & Culture | By Annie Nickoloff

No matter what you’re talking about, there always seems to be a way to connect it back to Cleveland; there’s always a Cleveland connection.

  • For instance, did you know that there’s a feathered Marvel character, with his own comic book and movie, that is based in Cleveland?

  • Or that the Strawberry Shortcake cartoon was first developed as a greeting card at American Greetings in Westlake?

  • You probably know that Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is from Cleveland. But did you know that one of its band members has launched two nonprofits to give back to the city?

  • And maybe you’ve watched the Super Bowl, or the Grammy Awards, or American Idol, and never realized that one of the background singers is a standout musician from Cleveland.

These connections, and others, inspired a new podcast called “The CLE Connection," here at Cleveland Magazine. The limited series features interviews with celebrities, historians, artists and more, about the ways that Cleveland has taken over the pop culture spotlight.

Tune in on Wednesdays, wherever you listen to podcasts.

Talk of the Town

A Rittman police sergeant was killed in the line of duty Sunday night. Sgt. Scott Ries came under fire responding to a shooting on Chippewa Trail, where the gunman, his ex-partner and her 13-year-old child were also found dead. Four Medina County deputies were struck and are expected to recover.

One of Downtown's last big "parking craters" has a buyer — the State of Ohio, which is purchasing the 350-space West 9th Street lot to ease the parking crunch at the nearby Lausche State Office Building. It will stay a surface lot, and the deal removes about $361,000 in annual property tax revenue from the rolls.

Lakewood's $119 million megaproject has nearly topped out at the former Lakewood Hospital site on Detroit Avenue. CASTO's Lakewood Common will bring nearly 300 apartments, townhomes, ground-floor retail and a 536-space garage to Downtown Lakewood.

Slavic Village has a new champion. Mark Rantala, who led the Lake County Port and Economic Development Authority for eight years, is the new executive director of Slavic Village Development as the nonprofit readies its comprehensive plan and projects like Village 55.

Two Greater Cleveland projects each won $7 million in state Transformational Mixed-Use Development tax credits: Project Scarlet in Downtown Cleveland and Valor Acres in Brecksville.

From the Editor

The podcast is here!! Well, the trailer is, at least — and the first full episode drops on Wednesday morning. Yay!

I'm excited for this limited series of eight episodes to get out there. Each one is a little bit different, but they all feature interesting stories about the people and projects that bring Cleveland into the spotlight — often in unexpected ways. I hope you enjoy listening to these stories as much as I enjoyed putting them together.

And, in my best rendition as an influencer, please — be sure to like and subscribe to the series on your favorite podcasting platform!
